  •    Let the wild rumpus start!

    IMG_6533.JPG

A few years ago we started the Halloween tradition of dressing up as a family in homemade costumes based on characters from books.

2 years ago we were Peter Pan...

Then last year we were the Sneetches (and Cat in the Hat) from Dr. Seuss...

This year we planned months ahead of time that we wanted to do Max and the wild things from the book Where the Wild Things Are.

We had so much fun with the costumes this year.  It was nice to actually start earlier than a night or two before Halloween.  We worked spare minutes most of the month of October.  We all had a great time creating and working together.  The kids really got in project mode and just made things all day long.  We have had all sorts of homemade "projects" around the house all month.

After all the fun (and plenty of late night movies), here we are as

    MAX(es) and THE WILD THINGS...

Our debut of the costumes is traditionally the Church Halloween party and this year was no different.

During the party, we threw a little spontaneous act to get all the kids attention for a while.  Our friend read the book Where the Wilds Things Are while we sort of acted it out.

Then to celebrate finishing the costumes, we wore them to go see the movie at our favorite theater downtown Boston.  It was a lot of fun!!!

We rode "the T" (Boston's subway/train) and got all sorts of stares, comments, photos, strange looks, and smiles...it was awesome.  Fun to hide behind a mask and just observe it all.

and ready to watch ourselves on the big screen...

    IMG_6505.JPG

Don't worry, we did not keep the masks on during the film.  They sat in chairs beside us. If you look close in this picture you can see where we look out, though.  (under the nose).

Kai and Nea were so excited as each of our characters entered the movie. It was fabulous! Nea would yell, "There's you Daddy!"    and "There's me!  That's me!"  It was as if we were really seeing ourselves on the big screen.

The film was very well done and we all enjoyed it, but the kids did not like the movie overall.  There was too much unresolved emotional conflict.  They had a great time, though and crashed on the T on the way home after a late night out on the town.

By the time Halloween rolled around, I felt like we had already celebrated since we had warn our costumes so much already.

Trick or Treating was, of course, super fun.  The kids were very patient with all the stops for picture requests etc. Kai just kept talking about what it was like to be famous.

Kai's big thing this year was trick or treating for Unicef so he got some candy and he and Nea also collected change to donate to Unicef for feeding hungry children.  They were so excited.

WOW, what GREAT costumes.  Loved the whole story and what a great tradition.  I have NEVER liked "dressing up" and admire those that can do it comfortably (Most people just say I always wear my costume).  Thanks for sharing.  Had dinner with your folks at Red Lobster.  Judy got a gift card for there and we wanted to go before the "never ending shrimp" ended this coming Monday.  It was good to start getting caught up.  They have been gone for SOOOO LOOOONG.

Hey Tiffany, it's Alisa (Angie's daughter) and I am absolutely speechless at your costume photos, they are beyond amazing! My sister-in-law's son is named Max and she was so excited for the movie to come out. I immediately emailed her the link to your blog after reading this. Love it!

Seriously!  These are amazing, wish I could have been there to see for myself.  Hmmm, ideas for next year, I'll have to think about that.

    Tiff,
I randomly found your blog when I was searching for Sneetch costume ideas...Wow! I love all of your Halloween costumes - The Wild Things are just AMAZING!!! My family dresses up as a group each year too. This year is Dr. Seuss characters.
BTW, I noticed that the location of some of your photos look suspiciously like an LDS chapel. How can you mistake the industrial carpet on the walls? LOL! We are LDS too, down here in FL. Here is my blog if you want to take a peek.

TIff you rock!  It's been awhile since I've been to your blog. You are just as I would have imagined-- Amazing and sooo cute with your kids!  My blog is willsrecovery.blogspot.com -- I think  you know his story. I am sure your husband would be fascinated with it as he probably sees lots of stroke patients….
